TRIPLE BOTTOM LINE

Lush's packaging strategy helps with caring for the planet and its people. Lush choose to have minimal packaging.

Lush motto when is comes to packaging: GO NAKED & LESS IS BEST

This refers to the products at Lush with no packaging such as their bath bombs, massage bars and solid shampoo bars to name a few. The inventors at Lush inventors discovered that by creating products with no water means they do not need to use packaging and preservatives.

By implementing this into their products, they have saved 1,350,000 litres of water just by making solid shampoo. Additionally if every individual starts using solid products, we can save over 30 plastic bottles a year from becoming rubbish.

On the contrary, some of the products at Lush have the need for packaging such as body lotions however are all made from re-usable/compostable materials.

NAKED:

1) Brand new bottle manufactured and filled with Lush product

2) Product sold and used by consumer

3) Once the product is used, it is washed out and sent to the recycling plant in order to be reused to make a brand new product.

THE LIFE CYCLE OF PLASTIC BOTTLES USED AT LUSH

Lush uses black pots (made from clean and non-toxic material) for some of their products. Since recycling for black pots is not available everywhere, Lush offers its customers an added incentive of getting a free face mask by bringing back 5 black-pots into the shop. Lush are also currently looking into using refills and to increase the amount of reusable packaging used when transporting their products between their factories and retail shops.

  • The total recycled content in all lush packaging is about 89%- this includes paper bags, aluminum tins, gift-wrap, ribbons and boxes.

  • Every ton of material purchased by Lush has come for 900kg of recycled sources.

  • Pots and bottles: made with 100% post-consumer recycled plastic . This saves about 65 tons of CO2 and 90 tonnes of plastic or 800 barrels of oil, every year.

  • Carry paper bags: Made with 100% post-consumer recycled paper. This saved 100 tonnes of CO2 each year. Lush have also started making their paper bags with a lighter material- this helps further reduce emissions.

  • In order to protect their products during shipment Lush use biodegradable plastic bags and eco-friendly packing tape.

  • Wrapping paper: Made with re-cycled paper and protected using shredded wood and shredded paper, which are both 100% biodegradable. Some of their other gift-wrapping paper is made from hand-spun cotton in Nepal.

  • Gift Boxes: Packaged with biodegradable filler.
